WordPress Category RSS/XML Feeds

Having been “self-employed” for the past 6 weeks has allowed me the time to think and read about blogging quite a bit. I’ve had an idea in mind for a while, but haven’t been able to really get it into pseudo-code in my head until today.

While searching for a WordPress plugin for category RSS feeds, I came across BloggingPro’s archives, and finally do have a solution to my dilemma of not being able to concentrate on one topic in this blog.

Everyone is saying that having a specific, unique, and original blog gets better traffic (even though not necessarily more right away), than ones that just syndicate (cough, sorry, I do that). I don’t just want to syndicate. I want to write original content.

I recently read a post (though I can’t remember where), on a few guys who just decided to write on something they liked a lot, namely the Mets. Their stats weren’t all that amazing to me, but what intrigued me was my inability to think of something that I’m super passionate about. Even more so, something I really want to write about.

So, I’m going to start with what I think is needed. I’m going to build my own network of blogs. I’m hoping I’ll be able to keep up with the writing that will be involved, which is why I’m hoping these topics will spur me on to be a little more passionate about them. Here’s the list of the up and coming blogs:

  • Bellingham Real Estate: I have wanted to learn more about the real estate business for a while, so this will be a journey. Real estate in general is a tough topic – probably well saturated – but, this is something I not only want to learn about, but that has potential if I actually do get visitors
  • Computer Help and Troubleshooting: Mainly this will be focused on PC’s, especially designed for novice users who are relatively new to the internet. Target demographic – mid 40’s aged folks who don’t know why their computer is doing wierd things. I’ll hope to give some tips and tricks to optimizing your computers as well as hopefully responding to any reader’s issues that get sent to me. Dialogue will be key.
  • Cell Phones: I already syndicate quite a bit of this information, and focus primarily on Treos because that’s the phone I currently love. However, I’ll probably syndicate more info, reviews, and share some of my own scripts and handy dandy items of interest I’ve created in the past with readers. The new phones coming out are amazing and really allow for some cool innovation in web applications in the future.

  1. Hey Nate,

Your actual problem with WordPress RSS and XML feeds is actually built into the core, although it is not a widely known feature. You can add /feed/ to the end permalink of any category or set of archives to get an RSS2 feed for that page, for example, to get an RSS feed for your “technie” category, you can use the link http://blog.perfectspace.com/category/techie/feed/

    Robert,

Hey, that’s awesome… Thanks for the info. They should really update the codex (I noticed the reference to “?id=” there today too).

Good to hear from ya again!
