Great idea. Thanks!

Perhaps someone (I'm too lazy), should create an upgrade script that takes a current 1.5 and ports it over to a nice, fresh-like-the-morning-dew (yet fully tested) 2.0.... eh eh? That would be nice.

The best thing to do might be to set up a test copy of WP2 in a subdirectory, with a different table prefix in the config. Copy your theme and plugins to the test copy and, uh... test :)

Once you're satisfied that things are working, delete the test copy and upgrade!

Thanks for the comment, Dougal.

Yea, I've heard that it's the under-the-hood stuff that's really changed, which does make me excited for the future. I'm just a little worried about some of the stuff I've seen out there about broken plugins. That's my main concern.

Should be interesting, needless to say, in the near future, to see what people do with the changes.

Backing up the db is just a precaution, and is a good idea in any case (I backed up my entire database and my entire web site directory tree). You shouldn't have to muck with .htaccess or plugins in most cases. I really expected tags4wp and the image browser plugin on my site to break, but they work fine.

A lot of people seem to think that the new version of WP is mostly just cosmetics. But the under-the-hood changes to the database accesses, plugin API, user roles/permissions, and the addition of "attachments" is going to open up a whole new world for plugin authors to create interesting modifications.
