Tweak Adsense Project: Yes, Definitely Remove Link Units

It’s been a few days since I removed the link units from the header (my last tweak). As I mentioned before, it was gathering a meager 0.6% CTR.

Bye bye link units.

The results of removing link units

Get this: CTR stayed the same, averaging just above 2%, but the eCPM went up $2.00!

Now, that’s obviously not a ton of money, but percentage that’s a 33% increase from where I was at. And the bottom line is that blogging is making me more money every time I tweak adsense.

I honestly don’t think it has anything to do with the fact it was a link unit versus some other type of ad unit. I do think that people just didn’t click on them because of placement or something. So, by removing them, I get a higher priced ad closer to where people are clicking more often. This is pretty simple stuff if you ask me.

If this keeps up for the next few days, I’ll have met my goal of getting a 7-day average of $4/day. Since I started tweaking adsense 6 days ago, I’ve already met one goal and most likely will surpass the second.

I have to say, setting goals small like this is fun and very encouraging. I might even say addicting. But, I have to thank the right people for indirectly kicking my butt into gear to do this.

Thank you Pro-bloggers

Out of all of these awesome folks, I would highly recommend Jayne May as the best. She’s not the highest paid out of these professional bloggers, but she is trying to be the most helpful. I’ve picked up a few tricks here and there from each one of these, but I think Jayne probably has the most promise in terms of helping folks figure this whole blog monetization thing out.

So, if you’re interested in making money from your own blog, definitely check those peeps out. If you’re interested in donating money, send it to me, or give it to someone you know. If you want pizza with bullets on it, call Arnold Schwarzenegger.

After meeting the 7-day average goal, my next target will be to make $8/day. I’m not sure I can do it with this blog, so if you have any suggestions, please say so. I’ll keep tweaking for about 3 weeks on this one to see if I can reach $8/day. If I can’t, I’ll shift my focus to one of my other blogs. But, I’ll keep talking about what I’m doing here. That way you don’t have to change the channel.

    Hey Nate,
I’ve really enjoyed the discussion about your adventures with adsense. I’m going to put some of these things into action for sure. As you may know, I’m a stickler for language and I was thrown off by the mention of “link unit in the header”. I have a pretty good idea what it means, but I’m still not too sure what a “link unit” is. I would love it if you could include screenshots (yes, even if they are live on the same site) to illustrate the specifics. Maybe I’m just a n00b. :)

Oh totally. I was thinking about that while writing it, so thanks for the reinforcement. I’ll make sure to include screenshots for posterity’s sake (and yours).

Thanks for the suggestion. If you learn anything from all this, I’d love to know about it.

    Thanks for the comment Lee.
