ePhoto: WordPress Photo Gallery Theme

This is by far one of the more beautiful themes I’ve seen.  That being so, it’s not free.  But at $19.95, it’s cheaper than most other themes I’ve seen, even non-photo related.  The nice part about purchasing a theme (like this one) is the support that comes along with it.  For those of you who are new to using WordPress and custom themes and plugins, support can be a major time-saver.

Anyway, the theme itself is very well done.  It shows off your beautiful photography with a nifty photo slider at the top.

Next Gen Gallery: WordPress Photo Gallery Plugin

NextGen Photo Gallery Plugin

The NextGen WordPress Plugin is one amazing plugin.  This one is free, and it’s been downloaded over a million times.  The screenshot doesn’t do it justice as it works with just about any theme you use.  It’s highly configurable and includes a few things to make it pretty like rounded corners, mirrored effects for your photos, and lightbox effects.  This one is worth checking out if you already have a theme you like an just want to integrate a new way to display your photos.

Black Canvas: WordPress Photo Gallery Theme

StudioPress created this beautiful Pro Theme called Black Canvas. It, similar to ePhoto, is designed with the professional photographer in mind.  This theme highlights one photo on the front page with a subset of photos below it.  It includes an RSS feed, your company information in the footer, thumbnail photos, and the ability to track statistics using Google Analytics.  This one also includes lifetime support from Studio Press and some tutorials on how to configure it.

PhotoBlog: WPZOOM

I found this one after I had already written the post, but I think it’s pretty decent looking too. This theme also includes a slideshow, but also has a “favorites” feature, which looks pretty good. It also has links to social media sites and a few different types of themes inside one. Also, WPZOOM has a few widgets that they produced themselves and include in all their themes. Last but not least, this photo blog theme has auto-cropping and gravatar support.

I just took a few minutes to look around and see if I could find some good photo themes and plugins. These are the best I came up with, but if you know others that I should have here, please say so in the comments.

Update: I did just fine a whole slew of good looking themes at Theme Forest. I’ve used a few themes from them and I generally find them very good. I highly recommend them for great prices on very professional themes.

This is a great theme by WooThemes, who does some amazing stuff. I’ve actually purchased themes from WooThemes and been very impressed with the quality, so I expect if you’re a photographer looking for some kind of WordPress gallery, you should find a good set of options there.

On December 2nd I had a problem with sleeping. Those problems usually end up in crazy wild projects that run through my mind until I find some way of dismissing it or doing it. That particular night turned a few hours into a viable, awesome project called 50 photos.

The idea behind the 50 photos project

The idea behind it is simple.

1. Find 50 of the most awesome photos I could find on Flickr which are Creative Commons licensed (usually indicating awesome people) and within a particular theme
2. Ask said photographers if they would like to get paid $1 per book for each photo of theirs included in the book.
3. Limit the printing of the book (creating scarcity)
4. Once everyone is on board, get the best printer possible and setup for printing/ordering
5. Market the book to those who want awesome original art/photographs.

So far the plan has gone very well. 28 photographers with 37 photographs have accepted this proposal.

How can you be a part of the 50 photos project?

We have some spaces left over because I was unable to contact and receive a response from some of the photographers selected. So, we’re opening the 50 photos project for submissions.

You can see the submission guidelines at the bottom of the photographers page. Please just drop in the url to your flickr photo which you would like to submit.

Obviously they’re making a killing off this arbitrage, but hey, I’ll try it out. I’ve tried sketchier things before, and this one actually pays you to create a gallery so you can host your photos. Not bad since most people ignore advertising anyway, except those crazy mid-western chicks.

To test it, I’ve uploaded a zillion photos, mostly of Greece, a few of Angelina Jolie, and some random other stuff. I have no idea how to optimize this potential revenue source, other than splashing a photo on my blog posts and other places. So, let’s try it.

Update: There’s also this nice pretty rotator thingy to use, which might come in handy with some other ideas too.

There, now that wasn’t so hard. Let’s see what happens in the long run. The optimized thumbnail photos seem to load relatively fast too, which is always good.

Oh, and I forgot to mention, they pay you via Paypal within 7 days. That’s pretty cool if you ask me. Make photo galleries like crazy. Get paid for it. What’s not to like.

What a poser.

A Honda per day?! Seriously? And, it’s not in the press? Why don’t we, the loyal Honda owners, know about this?

So, here’s how it happened. Doing a little detective work, I checked out the entrances to our supposed secured parking garage. I found the perp’s entry. They simply used a crowbar to spread the doorjam open enough to gain entry. Once they did that, they walked right past at least 10 cars that are at least 10 times as expensive as ours, took a handy-dandy screwdriver and had a party with our locks and ignition, and then left.

The (not so funny) thing is, not 4 spaces away is a Fararri. Before you even get to our space, there’s a Mustang, a suped up Ford 150, and a Porche. This just goes to prove that there’s a niche market for stolen cars that aren’t Hondas. If I was a thief, I’d go after the cool ones – the ones nobody else goes after.

But, since I’m not a thief, I just want to kick their asses inside out. Luckily, we have security cameras, so we’re watching the tapes today.

Mr. Thief, if you even know how to use the internet (though, you’re obviously not too bright), I have a message for you. Start running. I have no patience for people like you. I would love to find you before the police do and “watch you accidentally trip on the sidewalk” or something. Funny karma.
